উপশাখা ব্যাংকিং ও এজেন্ট ব্যাংকিং দুটোই আর্থিক অন্তর্ভুক্তির অন্যতম মাধ্যম। দুটোই গ্রাম বাংলার সাধারণ মানুষের কাছে ব্যাংকিং সেবা পৌঁছে দিচ্ছে।
অনেকেরই ধারণা, উপশাখা ব্যাংকিং চালু করার মাধ্যমেই আর্থিক অন্তর্ভুক্তির কাজটি সম্পূর্ণভাবে করা সম্ভব অর্থাৎ এজেন্ট ব্যাংকিং এর আর প্রয়োজনীয়তা নেই। ব্যবসা সফলতার কথা বিবেচনা করলে দেখা যাবে, উপশাখা নিয়ে ব্যাংকগুলো সর্বোনিম্ন উপজেলা পর্যায় পর্যন্ত যেতে পারবে। এর নীচে (যেমন – ইউনিয়ন পর্যায়ের বাজারগুলো কিংবা গ্রামের ছোট ছোট পকেট বাজারগুলোতে) যেতে গেলে ব্যাংকগুলো খরচের তুলনায় আয়ের ভারসাম্য হারাবে অর্থাৎ ব্যাংকগুলো ব্যবসা সফল হতে পারবে না। তাই ইউনিয়ন পর্যায়ের বাজারগুলোতো কিংবা গ্রামের ছোট ছোট পকেট বাজারগুলোতে সাধারণ মানুষের কাছে ব্যাংকিং সেবা পৌঁছে দিতে গেলে এজেন্ট ব্যাংকিং এর কোন বিকল্প নেই। এতে করে ব্যাংকের স্হাপনা ব্যায় যেমন সাশ্রয় হবে তেমনি অন্যদিকে পরিচালনা ব্যয়ও বহুলাংশে সাশ্রয় হবে পাশাপাশি আর্থিক অন্তর্ভুক্তির মূল উদ্দেশ্যও বাস্তবায়ন হবে।

মোদ্দা কথায় বলা যায় – এজেন্ট ব্যাংকিং ও উপশাখা ব্যাংকিং একে অপরের বিরোধী নয় বরং একে অপরের সম্পূরক। শাখা সাপোর্টেড উপশাখা আর উপশাখা সাপোর্টেড এজেন্ট আউটলেট হবে আর্থিক অন্তর্ভুক্তির সর্বোৎকৃষ্ট মডেল। তবে, এই ক্ষেত্রে ব্যাংকগুলোকে অবশ্যই ক্লাস্টার ভিত্তিতে এগোতে হবে। এতে করে, ব্যাংকগুলো অল্প সময়ের মধ্যে দেশব্যাপী একটি বড় রকমের নেটওয়ার্ক গড়ে তুলতে পারবে; ফলে বাড়বে গ্রাহকের সংখ্যা আর ব্যবসা সফলতার সাথে সাথে ছড়িয়ে পরবে ব্যাংকের পরিচিতি ও সুনাম।
